To Stretch or Not to Stretch?
August 2nd, 2010There has been and will continue to be a long debate behind stretching. Do I stretch before I exercise? Do I stretch after I exercise? Do I really need to spend the extra time to stretch?
The answer to all of those questions is YES! Flexibility is one of the foundations to how our body functions. You cannot gain range of motion without having proper flexibility and you cannot gain optimal strength without having proper flexibility.
The most effective way to stretch is to follow these simple guidelines:
1- Warm up lightly
2- Stretch!
3- Activity (whatever that may be)
4- Cool down
5- Stretch again!
There are positives to stretching before and there are positives to stretching afterwards. By stretching before activity, you can increase your circulation and prepare your muscles for a strenuous activity. By stretching after, you can regain tissue flexibility lost and you can prevent lactic acid from settling in your joints.
Obviously time is a factor for most people. My recommendation is that you pick 2-3 simple stretches to focus on your Hamstrings, calves and your shoulders. By targeting those three areas, you can make some positive strides towards increasing your flexibility!
